As part of our ongoing educational efforts, we host a series of symposia around the country and online webinars on sepsis and PCT. Learn more about the clinical challenges associated with sepsis and the use of PCT in identifying sepsis and monitoring therapy through these educational opportunities sponsored by BRAHMS and our partners. Please check back frequently as new presentations are scheduled throughout the year.

Advancing Patient Care with Procalcitonin
Wednesday, May 19, 7:00AM – 8:30AM EST
This symposium will explore the challenges of sepsis diagnosis and emerging patient care practices and protocols for addressing them. In particular, speakers will focus on Procalcitonin (PCT), increasingly recognized as the most promising marker of bacterial infections and sepsis. Speakers will review clinical applications for PCT in managing patients at risk for sepsis in critical care and emergent care settings, including its use in early identification of patients at risk for sepsis, differential diagnosis, and monitoring antibiotic therapy. The interactive session will feature actual patient case studies and will provide opportunities for audience questions and dialog with the speakers.

Procalcitonin: Advances in Infection and Sepsis Management

Thursday, April 29, 4:00PM – 5:00 PM EST
Webinar
Procalcitonin and the Future of Patient Care
Monday, January 11, 6:00pm – 8:00pm
Sepsis is a major healthcare challenge that threatens a significant number of patients. Diagnosing sepsis early and initiating
ap-propriate therapy is both crucial and challenging due to the lack of specific clinical signs and symptoms for sepsis. The protein Procalcitonin (PCT) is a sensitive biomarker for the detection of bacterial infection, including sepsis. This symposium will explore the application of PCT in the management of patients with sepsis or suspected sepsis, including its use in guiding clinical decisions regarding antibiotic therapy, helping reduce unnecessary use of antibiotics and shortening the duration of treatment.

A Decade Devoted to Survival and the Future of Patient Care.
Monday, November 2, 5:00pm – 10:00pm, San Diego
Despite significant changes in the treatment of sepsis as a result of new therapies and guidelines launched over the past decade, sepsis incidence and mortality remain high. Early identification and treatment of the septic patient continue to pose significant challenges. This symposium will explore the evolution of sepsis management from a patient perspective, providing an overview of developments in patient care over the past 10 years—from landmark sepsis trials to recent advances, including the application of biomarkers to sepsis patient management. The latest proposals on sepsis definitions and an overview of the latest sepsis trials will be presented. The interactive session will conclude with an open panel discussion.

The International Symposium on Intensive Care and Emergency Medicine
Brussels, Belgium, March 24 – 27 2009
The International Symposium on Intensive Care and Emergency Medicine is organized by the department of Intensive Care Emergency Medicine of Erasme Hospital, Free University of Brussels, in association with the Belgian Society of Intensive Care and Emergency Medicine (SIZ). The meeting is held every year in March, in Brussels. Started in 1980, this meeting has become established as one of the largest in its field, now attracting more than 5100 participants from countries world-wide. The following four symposia were presented at the ISICEM in a session entitled: Using Procalcitonin to guide antibiotic therapy.
